Developing a thirst for heroes of the faith

by Mike Vandermause on October 29, 2014

When Laura Young was growing up, she remembers having a Living Bible that was tattered and marked up from so much use.

Young’s passion for the word started early and continues to this day.

“I think the more I’ve read the Bible the more I love the Bible,” said Young, who will speak at the Green Bay Community Church women’s retreat Nov. 14-16 at the Blue Harbor Resort and Spa in Sheboygan.

“I love the stories in the Bible. I really love the Old Testament stories and the heroes of the faith.”

So she plans to examine what those Biblical heroes can teach us today.

“Let’s talk about who they are and why they’re important,” said Young.

“Significant” is the theme of the retreat this year.

“What I want to talk about is we get our significance in who we are in Christ,” said Young, who lives in Nashville, Tenn., with her husband and has four adult children.

Young, who is a writer, workshop leader and international speaker, hopes to instill a thirst for the Bible in the women who attend.

“You can lead a horse to water, you can’t make him drink, but you can salt the oats and make him want to drink,” said Young. “My desire is that I would be able to instill that desire: ‘Oh, I never knew those kinds of stories were in the Bible. Let me read a little bit about them.”

Here’s a sneak peek at some of Young's message subjects at the retreat:

*Jacob: How encountering God leaves us changed.

*Joseph: Using difficult situations to God’s glory.

*Moses: Asking the right questions when life gets tough.

*David: Not what I can do for God, but what God has done for me (significance).
